Cobia fishing in Destin is a spring tradition. Each March through May, cobia migrate east along the Emerald Coast beaches — from Panama City to Navarre — passing right in front of Destin and Fort Walton Beach. We sight-fish them from the tower, spotting the dark silhouettes cruising just below the surface and pitching live baits or heavy jigs as they swim by.
Average Destin cobia run 30-60 pounds, with plenty of 80-plus pound “fish of a lifetime” caught every season. They pull hard, fight long, and eat like champions — the meat is some of the best white-fleshed table fare in Florida.
When to Fish
March through May is the prime migration. Some cobia hold over on structure through summer, making them a bonus on nearshore fishing trips all season.

Questions about cobia fishing in Destin
Seasons, technique and what you can keep, plus which nearshore Gulf trip to book.
When is cobia season in Destin?
March through May is the migration and the reason experienced anglers book spring trips here. Some fish hold on structure through the summer as a bonus catch.
How do you catch cobia in Destin?
Sight casting. The boat runs the beach looking for fish, and when one is spotted the crew pitches a live eel, a crab or a jig in front of its nose. Bright, calm days are what you want.
Can we keep a cobia?
Yes, inside the state and federal size and bag limits, and it is excellent eating. The captain confirms the current rules before you leave the dock.
