Jack crevalle are the bullies of the inshore water. Blunt headed, deep bodied and built entirely for speed, they hunt in packs and hit a bait hard enough to take a rod out of an unprepared hand. Hooked on light tackle they will run until the drag heats up.
They are not a table fish, which is exactly the point. A jack is caught for the fight, photographed and released, and it is very often the fish somebody talks about at dinner.
When to Fish
Late spring through summer is the peak, when packs of jacks push bait to the surface in the passes, the harbour and along the beaches. Warm water is what brings them.
What to Expect
Fast moving lures, topwater plugs or live bait thrown into a feeding school. Bring your arms. Often found alongside ladyfish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel working the same bait.
Year-Round
Perfect for redfish, speckled trout, and more in the calm waters of the Choctawhatchee Bay.

Questions about jack crevalle fishing in Destin
Seasons, technique and what you can keep, plus which bay trip to book.
When do jack crevalle show up in Destin?
Late spring through summer, when the water warms and packs of jacks push bait to the surface in the passes, the harbour and along the beaches.
Are jack crevalle good to eat?
No, and nobody here pretends otherwise. They are caught for the fight, photographed and released. If you want fish for the table, ask for redfish, trout or a nearshore trip.
How hard do jack crevalle fight?
Pound for pound they are the hardest pulling fish in the bay. On light tackle a decent jack will run repeatedly and take longer to land than a redfish twice its weight.
