Kingfish Fishing in Destin, FL

Blistering runs and explosive strikes — a Destin trolling favorite.

King mackerel — “kingfish” or “smokers” — are one of the most explosive nearshore targets in Destin and Fort Walton Beach. When a king crushes a slow-trolled live bait, the drag screams and line peels off so fast it’ll steam the reel. These fish move in big schools along the beaches, passes, and nearshore reefs.

Our Destin kingfish charters run live-bait trolling patterns with cigar minnows, blue runners, and ribbonfish on wire leaders. Average fish run 15-25 pounds, but 40-plus pound “smokers” show up regularly in spring and fall runs.

Kingfish Tackle & Trolling Techniques

King mackerel demand serious gear. We run medium-heavy 20 to 30 lb conventional or spinning setups, single-strand wire leaders (they have razor teeth and lightning runs), and stinger rigs with live cigar minnows, blue runners, or hardtails. Slow-trolling live bait is the most reliable producer off Destin, especially around bait pods and structure. When schools are tearing up bait on the surface, a fast-retrieved spoon or jig will get blistering strikes.

Best Spots & Seasons for Destin Kingfish

Look for kings around nearshore wrecks, reefs, the Destin Pass, and along bait migration routes 5 to 9 miles out. Spring (April through June) and fall (October through November) are prime as bait moves through. Kingfish hit hard, run long, and average 15 to 30 pounds with regular shots at 40-plus pound smokers. Any size makes excellent smoked fish dip. Book a nearshore charter when bait shows up.

When to Fish

Peak runs happen spring (April–May) and fall (October–November) as the fish migrate along the Emerald Coast. Catchable year-round in smaller numbers.
